So Day Two of The Organised Housewife’s 20 Days to Organise & Clean Your Home Challenge is done. This post is extremely late as I fell asleep on the couch at my in-laws’ house in the middle of typing!
Mr Monkey was home today so it was great to have his help to get through the tasks. He let me sleep in a little (another night of little, broken sleep) and then woke me up and grabbed the folder with the list of tasks so we could get started. Just a pity that he suddenly decided to have a shower halfway through and left me to do the rest! At least he was a lot of help while he was there!
I’ve ignored the bedroom a lot lately. I knew that there were baskets of clean washing everywhere and a full basket of dirty washing but had been putting off doing anything about it. I was seemingly oblivious to the mess beside our beds. It wasn’t until I was taking these before photos this morning that I realised how bad it had gotten. A little embarrassing!
I think I’ve made the bed once or twice in the months since we moved in to this house. It was a habit that I was really good at before we moved! The quilt cover needed to be changed but it was too much work. That’s my folder with all of the tasks in on the edge of the bed.
So we stripped the bed and put the linen in the washing machine ready to be washed tomorrow (we weren’t going to be home for the rest of the afternoon). Mr Monkey vacuumed the mattress, flipped it and then vacuumed the other side. After we had finished the rest of the room we got new linen and quilt cover and remade the bed. I miss our blue and white quilt cover but the black will have to do for now.
When Mr Monkey took the linen down to the laundry he also grabbed all of the dirty washing and took it down too – I sorted it out when I went down later. While he was working with the bed I folded and sorted all of the clean washing and then he put his away.
Declutter & Organise
Today’s Declutter task was to declutter any surfaces in the bedroom – the only surfaces we have are the bedside tables. The Organise task was to organise the first drawer in the bedside tables – we don’t have drawers in ours so I combined these two tasks and decluttered and organised the whole tables.
As I said, I hadn’t realised how messy the bedside tables had gotten. There was just a lot of… crap. I have gotten in the habit of grabbing an ice block on the way up to bed and eating it while reading or checking Twitter in bed. I’ve been getting some bad reflux at night and have found the ice blocks soothe it somewhat. Of course, all of those ice block wrappers had to go somewhere and they just ended up on the bedside table. I’ve also had a cold lately so there’s tissues. And books that I’ve finished reading that need to go down on the bookshelf. And child Nurofen from the night that Lily was sick. And a mass of cords for phones, tablets, lamps, the fan and an alarm clock. A mess.
So, I got to work on my side first. I got rid of the all of the rubbish first, then piled up the books that I had read, ready to take down to the bookshelf. In the cupboard at the bottom are all the books I haven’t read and the ones on the shelf are the books that I’m currently reading (I have 4 on the go at the moment, including one on the tablet).
I reorganised the lamp and alarm clock (basically only used so I can easily see the time in the middle of the night) and moved the tablet up on to the table instead of on the floor.
I need to organise the cords better but for the moment I bull clip on the side of the table will have to do.
I then moved on to Mr Monkey’s side. The bucket on the floor holds all of his tissues from his man flu. And yes, that is a bin right next to it. I’m not really sure what was on the bedside table – just a mess of glasses, tissues, pieces of paper etc. Fairly easy to clean really. There isn’t anything in his cupboard and the shelf holds the one book that he has been reading for over a year.
The new habit today is to make the bed every day. As I said, I had gotten quite good at this in the old house – it was a step in the Baby Steps and for some reason it was one of the only things that stuck.
I would normally get up, go to the bathroom and then come back to get dressed and make the bed. It was also easier to make it during the day if I forgot as I was upstairs more often, in the kitchen or bathroom.
In this house it’s easier to forget as I tend to try to limit the amount of times I walk up the stairs. If we’re not going out for the day I tend to stay in my pajamas so don’t go back up until the evening. I need to get in to the habit of doing it before I go downstairs in the morning. I also need to get Lily back in the habit of making her bed.
When we were finished in the bedroom we got some leftovers out of the fridge for lunch. When we finished lunch and while Mr Monkey washed the dishes I got to work on the 5 minute task – wiping down the dining room chairs. I actually forgot to set the timer and sort of got caught up in doing it so it actually took me more like 20 minutes. But I did wipe them all down really well, including all of the little crevices that don’t get touched when I do a quick wipe. Yes, they don’t look the best – it was a cheap dining set and we’ve had it for about 5-6 years but I think it adds character!
After lunch we came out to Mr Monkey’s parents’ house, left Lily here and headed to the movies to see Life of Pi. Really good! We came back and had dinner and then I fell asleep on the couch. But not until I had realised that we actually had a 3yo birthday party that we were supposed to be attending today! Stupid me hadn’t put it in the calendar and had completely forgotten about it. I feel terrible but hopefully we can make it up to her another day.
So, that’s Day Two done! I’m proud to say that we got all of the tasks done and the kitchen is also still clean and tidy. Here’s hoping we can keep it up!
