One thing that I love about getting our fruit and vegetables from Andy & Ted is when they introduce new produce as it comes in to season; it gives us a chance to try fruit and vegetables that we may not have tried before. This week they have introduced both oyster and pearl mushrooms.
I’m not normally a big fan of mushrooms – I used to hate them. However, after introducing them as part of a meal (i.e. hidden in something else) I have found that I have begun to enjoy the taste. I still couldn’t eat them by themselves or as a soup but in a pasta or a risotto I’m starting to love them.
So, I decided to try and find a special meal to use them in. It didn’t seem right to use them as I would our normal button mushrooms – hidden in a risotto or simply sliced and pan fried with other veggies. I tried to get Mr Monkey involved but he asked too many questions – like “what sort of meal do you want?” Hmph! Men!
After googling “oyster mushrooms” I came across this Beef in Oyster Sauce recipe. We enjoy asian meals and this looked quite simple – a good thing as I will be cooking it on Tuesday night when Mr Monkey is at work. It does make the oyster mushrooms the “hero of the dish” (damn Masterchef) and I might use the pearl mushrooms in there as well.
See, this is why I love meal planning; getting to try new meals and new skills!
What’s on your meal plan this week?
