{Meal Plan} 25th – 31st July, 2011

Our shopping list board

I have been planning to do a meal plan post for ages but have either not had the plan ready in time or have had a boring week or have had a week when we are hardly home at all.

Every Saturday (most weeks) I try to sit down at the laptop and work out the plan and menu for the next week. I only plan dinners at the moment but I think I’m going to need to start planning lunches as I’m not happy with how we eat during the day at the moment. I’ve shared my weekly plan on here before and I’ve made a few adjustments – I’ve added in a To-Do and Cleaning column. I’ve also added another sheet with the new recipes for the week. You can download the template if you like:

This is where our plan goes – on the fridge. I’ve found this is the best place to put it. Our fridge is sort of in the centre of our top floor and it’s the easiest place to check it, for the night’s meal and also for what cleaning needs to be done. I have a pencil that’s attached to a magnent that stays on the fridge and once I done a task or made a meal I strike it out. It’s a good feeling when I get to the end of the week and see the whole page marked off and it also keeps me on top of what I’ve missed and need to catch up on. Once the week is over I take the pages down and store them in my Flying Journal. I will probably have to clear this out soon and maybe file them away but for the moment it is good to have them to refer back to. We’ve been doing this for a few months now, since I did the BabyStep way back when, and it seems to be working really well for us.

To the left you can see what this week’s looks like for our house. It’s a fairly straight forward week for us this week. Mr Monkey is off work on Monday and we have Lily’s usual swimming lessons, as well as donating blood in the afternoon. The rest of the week is business as usual and Lily & I will probably spend most of the time at home cleaning. Then Saturday Lily & I will be heading down to my Mum’s house and Mr Monkey will be joining us after work that night. Sunday is my Dad’s birthday and we are heading out for lunch. I’m not sure if we are coming home that night or not so have left dinner off for Sunday for the moment. So basically, 5 meals to plan this week. I had planned to do something special on Monday but it looks like it will be a fairly busy day so we most likely won’t be interested in cooking anything too difficult. Thursdays are always busy with Mother’s Group so I always plan to have something easy and quick for dinner – this week it’s leftovers, most likely the veggie shepherd’s pie from the other week.

So here’s the meal plan:

Monday – Ravioli and pre made sauce.
Tuesday – Meatloaf
Wednesday – Italian Sausage Hotpot – from the August issue of The Healthy Food Guide
Thursday – Leftovers
Friday – Teriyaki Chicken – from the August issue of The Healthy Food Guide
Saturday – N/A
Sunday – N/A

    Very organised!

I used to meal plan while I was doing the shopping list but now we are more relaxed about the whole thing. We just try to work out what we are going to eat while we are doing the shopping.

Lunch for both of us is mostly the same thing most days. Toasted sandwich followed by fruit and yoghurt. We will mix it up with free range chicken or ham, sometimes egg or tinned tuna then we add salad stuff. Lunch is then a good balance of protein, carbs fruit and vege.

    • Thanks! It’s really helping us keep on top of things.

Your lunch sounds good. Because it’s me and Lily home most days I’ve been trying to find things for us to eat – we sometimes have sandwiches or I’ll quickly cook some penne and peas. I sometimes have soup but Lily doesn’t really eat that so I have to make something else for her – normally she has a sandwich. I think it just may be easier if I plan our lunches too.

  2. […] a year so I knew I’d been doing meal plans each week for almost a year. I just checked my first Meal Plan post and it appears I’ve been meal planning for an entire year! (my first post was a few weeks […]
