Each month I have allocated zones of our house to be decluttered over the month. This month, February, has been the Computer Room.

One of the decluttering tasks was to go through my jewellery box. I can’t remember the last time I sorted out my jewellery box, it’s possible it was when I first moved out of home, 5 years ago! I had been simply putting new jewellery on top of old jewellery, and I could never find the stuff I needed when going out. I don’t wear a lot of jewellery – some bangles and my wedding and engagement ring most days, but I like to wear some earrings or a necklace when I go out.

So, one day while Lily was happily playing downstairs, I sat down on the floor with the box and started going through it drawer by drawer. I sorted it in to piles – to keep, to give to my sister/charity, to throw away (damaged or without a pair). I then sorted each of those piles in to piles of bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc as I went. And for someone who doesn’t wear a lot of jewellery I certainly had a lot of it!!!

I ended up with a large pile to go to my sister and she has since sorted through it for herself, with what she doesn’t want going to the charity stores. Most of these were items that no longer suit my lifestyle or my style (I still had things from primary school!). There was a small pile of broken necklaces and earrings that were missing a pair and I was left with a reasonable amount to go back in to the jewellery box.

I wiped out each section and then placed the jewellery back in. Storing the earrings was fairly easy and I have sorted them in to similar styles. There is a section in the second drawer to store rings (although I only really have 3 that I don’t wear but keep for sentimental reasons). In the bottom section I have all the jewellery and other accessories from my wedding, including my garter and a scrap of fabric from the bridesmaids dresses (I keep a scrap of my dress fabric in my wallet, with the booklet from my great-grandfather’s funeral. Yes, I’m a little sentimental like that).

The necklaces have been put in where they fit but I need to look at some better storage for these. Curling them up doesn’t really work and I’m a little worried they will get tangled. I’ve had a look on Pinterest but can mostly only find ideas for display/storing necklaces on pinboards and similar. I don’t necessarily want to display them but I would like something that will hang them up and keep them from getting tangled. Any ideas?

So, there’s task one of my decluttering tasks done! It was only a little one but it feels good. And I’ve found some jewellery that I forgot I had and I know I’ll be able to find some nice earrings next time I go out.

How do you store your jewellery? Could it use some decluttering too?

Hi, new followers here. Great job cleaning the jewels up went through mine about 12mths ago when I moved…had things from school as well…I treated myself for Mothers day last year a mirror on a stand that had a jewllery cabinet built in…so in love with it…stores it all out of sight and its lockable…I got one for my teenage daughter too for Xmas made such a difference to her messy room, she has her make up and nail polish in there too. Another idea is simply screwing up a cup hanger onto the inside of your wardrobe door or wall, hands necklaces and bangles neatly, my girlfriend did this looks really good and cheaper solution…she got her hanger from Bunnings :)

      Welcome Jen! Thanks for visiting!

That sounds like an amazing cabinet! Would love to have something like that but unfortunately we just don’t have the room. I’ll have a look in to doing the cup hanger thing but not sure it will work with our wardrobe. But then again I didn’t even think of the wardrobe so you’ve given me an idea. Thanks! :)

I did this recently and found an excellent hanging rack from ‘Diva’… It was $10 and suits my long necklaces wonderfully. Another cheap option is to buy snap lock bags and give one to each necklace. The keeps them from tangling with each other (i did this for most of my life and I still have necklaces from when I was 15)

    Hope this helps!

    The jewellery box looks great!
