I am always on the look out for new snacks for Lily – she is very much a snacker and prefers to eat throughout the day instead of big meals. We try to discourage this but when she does have snacks I try to make sure they are small portions and as nutritious as possible.
So when SunRice offered to send me some of their new Mini Bites to try I was very excited to add to Lily’s snack collection.
SunRice Mini Bites are delicious, small rice cakes, seasoned with tasty natural flavours and they are the perfect bite-size for children. Packed with whole grains, they also contain less fat than regular potato chips, for a yummy and healthy lunchbox snack (that big critters will enjoy too!) They are available in three flavours, Spooky Original, Devilish Chicken and Creepy Cheese.
Unfortunately, Lily wasn’t really a fan. But she is 3 years old and even her favourite colour changes every day. Plus, she hasn’t really had any rice cake type snacks before so I think it was mostly the texture that turned her off. I’m definitely going to try her on them again.
On the other hand, the rest of us really enjoyed them. I tried them in the interest of a comprehensive review and was surprised to find that I really liked them. The flavours are mild but still tasty and they are the perfect little snack size. I also found that they go great with cheese on a cheese platter!
Mr Monkey also tried them, especially the Devilish Chicken flavour; I don’t like chicken flavouring but he loves them. He also agreed that the flavours were quite mild but still very pleasant and he easily ate the bag full. I think he liked not having to share them with anyone!
Chloe loves any food, or anything that she can put in her mouth so I thought I’d give some to her to try too. She LOVED them and would’ve eaten the packet if I’d let her. I tried to steer clear of giving her the Spooky Original flavour as they have added salt but I was happy for her to have the others – they are made with wholegrain and low in salt and saturated fat. They’re also the perfect size for her to hold and chew on and they don’t crumble in her mouth too much so I’m not afraid of her choking on them.
(Please note, Chloe is 7 months old and has been on solids for a few months. We also follow the Baby Led Weaning theory so she is well practiced with finger foods. There is no indication on the SunRice packages as to what age to give the Mini Bites but I’m sure they would caution to use common sense. Chloe is always supervised while eating.)
The packet size are perfect for an afternoon snack and would also be perfect in lunch boxes, especially as they are National Healthy School Canteen Amber compliant!
