{This Week’s Fly Zone} – The Kitchen

August 8, 2011 by flyingdrunkenmonkey

Once again, when it came to the Computer Room zone I failed, once again. The week started off well but then slowly went downhill and ended with almost nothing done, plus a kitchen ful of dirty dishes. But at least I made some yummy dishes:

So, I am determined to get stuck in this week and make it better. There is a lot to do and I only have five days to do it in – it is my niece’s 1st Birthday party on Sunday so I will be at my parents’ house on the weekend. (For the record, how has it been a year since that little monkey was born?!?)

So, here’s what I’m going to do this week:

  • Sweep floor
  • Scrub stove top
  • Clean cupboard doors
  • Clean out fridge
  • Clean small appliances
  • Clean big appliances (outside of fridge etc)
  • Mop floor
So there you have it, my plan for the week. I’ll let you know how I go at the end of the month.

Do you have a plan for this week? Are you working in the kitchen too? Let me know what you have planned in the comments below.

Ahhh, my kitchen plan is to kick my housemate and tell her that cleaning actually means getting the muck off the benches. She ‘cleaned’ the kitchen only for me (the anal neat freak that I can be) to come in and re-do everything because it wasnt done properly (yes, I am turning into my mother!)

My big job this week was the bathroom. I got up on the step ladder and cleaner the roof and the vent plus the shower doors (major effort) then scrubbed the bath until it was white as white can be. Have I mentioned my love for Sugar Soap?

The only sad thing is, the bathroom skips a week on our roster and gets manky really quickly. I think im going to have to ammend that little side step…

Im going to try and organise the draws in my bedroom this week…

    • Yuck I’m really glad I’ve never had to live with housemates. One husband and a baby is enough!!
Maybe you need to re-adjust the “zones” in your house. Is there one thats being done at the moment that doesn’t really need to be done? Or only needs to every couple of weeks?

Look, they arent too bad. It just comes down to division of labour. Someone always feels like they aren’t being treated fairly (at the moment, its me). For me, when I clean, it isnt just whats visually messy, its about getting the bacteria and cleaning the cupboards etc etc. No-one else in my house feels that way and if they do, they dont like acting on it because ‘she wont do it’.

I would love to change our zones (Bathroom, Kitchen & Floors) because I think that they are too broad and frankly, they arent dumb enough instructions to follow. So rather than just: ‘Clean the kitchen’ we need to have: ‘Clean the microwave’. It will make the lists longer, but at the end of the day we will be the winners because we will be in a clean house with all have an even amount of chores. I would be the only one who would do this willingly and happily because at the current state of things I am doing all the housework and my hosuemates dont have too.

I can live with all of that. What gets me is the dishes. If someone has used a cup and im doing the dishes, ill wash that cup (smart/nice thing to do) everyone in my house would leave the cup and not bother cleaning it because its not their technical responsibility!

        • Yeah by the sounds of it, it must be really difficult to live with people who have differing ideas of what “clean” means.

It sounds like you do need to work out actual tasks under each zone so everyone knows exactly what needs to be done so there can be no disagreements. But I don’t know how you’ll get them to agree to that…

None are nearly as invested as me… If my name goes on the lease, that is going to change very quickly!

I don’t really understand the whole ‘zones’ thing. If you are just concentrating on one area then doesn’t the other areas of your house end up neglected?

I find that I do a whole house clean, including beds, once a week to make sure it’s all clean, then I do a whip through once a day {sometimes twice – morning & night} to make sure it’s nice and tidy.

But different things work for different people =)

    • It’s ok, it probably seems a little confusing. One thing I’m try to get a hang of as well is the Weekly Blessing Hour – basically you spend an hour, either all at once or over the week, and do the general things. Like clean bathroom, change the sheets, general tidy – she explains it here – FlyLady FAQs.
The zones work in the sense that by the end of the month you’ve done intense cleaning in all zones. I think the way it’s supposed to work is that if done properly you shouldn’t really need to do any work in the zone until it comes around again. Obviously I’m not there yet :)

PS I obviously don’t know the first thing about Fly Lady and her steps, so pardon my ignorance above! haha!

I shined my sink and declutterred my tupperware tonight. Tomorrow I’ll declutter my pantry.
