{This Week’s Fly Zone} – The Living Room

June 27, 2011 by flyingdrunkenmonkey

The Living Room has been fairly messy lately. I was actually a little uneasy about putting this photo up but had promised my self I’d be honest. Lily’s toys are always everywhere and Mr Monkey’s paperwork has taken over the top of the TV cabinet and the end of the couch. I have vacuumed fairly regularly so the room is fairly clean and there is not a lot of rubbish around but the room still looks very messy.

The main problems that I can see are the toys and the paperwork. I have been asking Mr Monkey for ages to clean up his paperwork, but to be fair, he works very long hours and is hardly ever home. I’ve been too scared to touch it because I’m afraid I will lose something or mess it up. But maybe I’m just going to have to suck it up and do it and be careful about it.

Mr Monkey keeps all of the dockets from his work so he can keep track of what was bought and when. That means a lot of little pieces of paper laying around and Lily likes to play with them and has occasionaly ripped some. I have an old shoe box under the bed which I am going to put all of the dockets in. I’m not sure where the shoe box will go but it will most likely have to go somewhere in the Living Room so that Mr Monkey remembers to put the new dockets in there.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the rest of the paperwork. He needs a folder or a file of some sort but that’s really his decision to make. Perhaps I will see once I’ve sorted through it all.

The toy situation is a little hard. We have used one of the cupboards in the TV cabinet for all of her soft toys and there is two big plastic boxes in the spare room next door with the rest of her toys. However, all of her toys normally just end up on the floor in the living room, especially now as she has learnt how to open the cupboard and pull all of the soft toys out. I’m not sure what we are going to do with this. I’m thinking about bringing out one of the toyboxes in to the Living Room and having Lily pack away her toys each night. The only issue with this is that Lily doesn’t have a set bed time and goes to sleep on the couch with me or on her little couch before we move her to bed when Mr Monkey gets home. Perhaps I’ll try it this week and see how it goes.

So, anyway, here’s what I’m going to do this week:

Living Room:

  • Dust
  • Clear off top of TV cabinet
  • Clean couches
  • Organise paperwork filing
  • Pack away toys
  • Vacuum
So there you have it, my plan for the week. I’ll let you know how I go at the end of the month.

    You can do it honey!!!

Hey have you seen these before?
I thought it might be handy for the receipts and paperwork, you could hang it over a door and then he can put them straight into the relevant spot as soon as he walks in.

You can do it! Remember, baby steps! I think it’s a good idea to find another home – like a box – for your DH’s work papers for now, even the ones that aren’t receipts. You can setup some time to help him organize them. My DH works long hours too, and I let him keep one pile in his office. They are not allowed to be elsewhere in the house. If I find one of his work papers somewhere else in the house, I take them to his desk or his pile.

On having Lily help keep her toys put away, try not to think about it as a “just before bed” thing. I know on some Flylady radio shows she has (not lately, sniff!) talked about a “top of the hour” thing for kids to put away their toys they are not playing with. You might want to try working with her on that. It might help her be better than we are about putting things away after we use them, LOL

    • Hi Heather thanks for the advice!
I’ve already done what I said and have put the dockets in to a shoebox and have sorted the rest in to two piles. I think we may need to get some sort of filing cabinet because our other paperwork is a mess too.

That’s a good idea actually. But as she’s only 17 months old at the moment I don’t know if she’ll “get” it. But can’t hurt to try!!

      Thanks :)
