Cleaning Zone - The Bedrooms - The Flying Drunken Monkey

I’m not sure if this is the zone I was up to. I feel like I’ve missed too many weeks lately. But it’s the zone that needs work at the moment so I’m going with that.

Not much cleaning has been happening lately. I feel like I’ve been focusing on existing and that’s about it.

But on Saturday I suddenly had a burst of energy (after having a day of completely no energy the day before) and decided I was going to spend just 15 minutes in each room in the house, tidying and cleaning a little. I didn’t have a plan other than that, just do the basics of what was needed.

To make it easy I started at the front of the house, in the lounge room. This is where we spend most of our time so it gets messy quickly. It doesn’t matter how often I tidy it will be a mess at the end of the time. I roped Mr Monkey and the girls in to helping me and we were able to get the room tidy in the 15 minutes. I was even able to go further than the usual tidy up of the toys and got the cabinet cleaned off and the paperwork at the end of the couch tidied. Once the 15 minutes was finished I spent an extra few minutes and vacuumed. Much better! Of course, it isn’t perfect (the toys need to be sorted better, the shoe rack needs to be fixed and the shoes sorted and the bookshelves need to be cleared) but it is so much better than when I started.

I moved straight into the dining room as the others put a movie on. This room seemed messy but was mostly because we had a lot of laundry drying on racks. They were dry but I just hadn’t got around to putting them away. That didn’t take long to take care of so I moved to clearing the table and the mantel above. There was also a pile of stuff in front of the bookshelves that I have been meaning to deal with for ages. A lot of it needed to go back out to the shed for storage so I got Mr Monkey to do that for me. I still need to clear off the computer table (again) and tidy the bookshelf but again, so much better.

After a break for lunch (and a nap) I moved on to the kitchen. Above is the before picture. I had originally planned to really do the basics – I got the dishes washed, then set my alarm for 15 minutes. I started on the end of the bench, clearing things off that belonged somewhere and just basically tidied it up. I cleaned off underneath the dish rack and around the sink and then under the toaster etc. I also cleared off the bench beside the fridge which had become very overrun with stuff. I cleaned the window as well and some of the cupboard doors. I went over the 15 minutes (probably closer to 45 minutes) but I got on a roll and wanted to get it finished.

It really is amazing the difference you can get done in such a short time. I didn’t get the floor swept and mopped and the pantry is in desperate need of a sort but it’s a whole lot better. After putting water on to boil for dinner and instructing Mr Monkey to cut up some veggies I moved on to the bathroom.

The night before I had sprayed the shower with the cleaner so just needed to give that a quick wipe over and rinse. I haven’t been doing my bathroom blitz (wipe of the sink and toilet each day) for awhile so I made sure to give both a really good clean, including reorganising the baskets of toiletries on the bench. I gave the bath a quick wipe over and picked up all the toys on the floor. Easy!

By that stage I was pretty exhausted (this was about 500% more cleaning than I’ve been doing lately) but after dinner I made sure to wash the dishes and wipe the table and vacuumed under the dining table.

It’s amazing how much calmer the house felt just by having the downstairs so much cleaner. Of course, by the next morning the lounge room was a complete mess again but I’m going to work harder to make sure it is tidy each evening.

I had planned to do the same in the bedrooms on Sunday morning before we left for the in-laws’ but I really struggled to get out of bed and get motivated.

So that’s part of my plan for today (plus groceries). I might just focus on getting Lily’s room done today – the toys need to be organised as they’ve been pulled out a lot lately.

Our room is very messy at the moment but mostly due to the amount of clean washing that needs to be folded and put away. That will probably be more than a 15 minute job but I should be able to get the majority of the rest of the zone work done in 15 minutes.
