We’ve never been big eaters of hot cross buns in the FDM house. Mr Monkey doesn’t like the spices, I don’t know if Lily has really ever had one and they have just never been much on my radar.
But when I was contacted by Bakers Delight and asked to review some of theirs I thought, why not?!
We received a six pack of traditional and a six pack of the choc chip. Unfortunately they arrived the day after I had seen the dietician! Luckily, I had a look at the nutritional information on the website and found I am able to have half a bun as part of my morning or afternoon tea. I’ve had this a few times now and they haven’t spiked my sugar levels. I did try having a full bun one day but unfortunately that pushed my levels up. I also have to make sure I only eat the bottom half as the top has the cross and glaze.
Lily hasn’t actually had a bun yet – I gave her the top from one of my mine, she took a bite and gave it back saying it was “too sticky”. Although we did find a little rip in one of the packets with a bite taken out of one of the buns. Lily told us that it was her (imaginary) friend, Marnie.
The traditional buns are delicious with just the right amount of spices and fruit. The choc chip ones are divine! I’ve taken to putting my half in the microwave for about 10 seconds and then smearing it with a small amount of margarine. So good. Even without microwaving the buns are lovely and soft, and even though it is going on a week since we received them they are still quite fresh.
The hot cross buns have been in stores since February but I implore you to buy some this Saturday, 16th March. This Saturday is Bunraiser Day where $1 from every six pack of hot cross buns sold will go to local Children’s hospitals.
The money raised will assist eight hospitals around Australia purchase essential medical equipment and resources. The hospitals this year are;
♥ Royal Children’s Hospital (VIC)
♥ Sydney Children’s Hospital (NSW)
♥ John Hunter Children’s Hospital (NSW)
♥ Canberra Hospital (ACT)
♥ Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation (QLD)
♥ Women & Children’s Hospital Foundation (SA)
♥ Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation (WA)
♥ Royal Hobart Hospital (TAS)
We thankfully have not had to use a childrens hospital and I hope we never do. However, I know how much important work they do for sick children and how important it is that we support them.
Please help support this very worthwhile cause this Saturday by buying some yummy traditional, choc chip or fruitless hot cross buns ($6.50 for a six pack at my local store).
To help you do that Bakers Delight have kindly provided me with 3 $10 vouchers to giveaway to you! Perfect for a six pack of hot cross buns and a loaf of bread or maybe one or two of those awesome cheese and bacon rolls.
