Meal Plan ★ What we ate while camping

meal plan - camping - The Flying Drunken Monkey

As you are probably aware we went camping for a week during mid-February. There was just the three of us – myself, Mr Monkey and Lily. We had eskys (coolers) which we filled with ice, a 2-burner gas BBQ, saucepans and fry pans, a toasting contraption to use on the BBQ and access to shops which were quite close by.

Our Camping Meal Plan:

♥ Dinner – Sausage bolgnese w/ spaghetti

♥ Breakfast – Toast/ coffee
♥ Lunch – Leftovers/ sandwiches
♥ Dinner – Sausage “burgers”

♥ Breakfast – Toast/ coffee
♥ Lunch – Sausages and sandwiches
♥ Dinner – Burgers and chips

♥ Breakfast – Toast/ coffee
♥ Lunch – Fish & chips
♥ Dinner – Bolgnese w/ shell pasta

♥ Breakfast – Bacon and egg rolls
♥ Lunch – Local bistro
♥ Dinner – Chicken, mashed peas and potato

♥ Breakfast – Cereal/ fruit tubs
♥ Lunch – Leftover toasties
♥ Dinner – Fish and Ricotta & Spinach Agnoliti, Semi-dried tomato sauce

♥ Breakfast – Ceral/ fruit tubs
♥ Lunch -
♥ Dinner – Pasta alfredo and Mac & Cheese mixed together with capsicum

As you can see, it probably wasn’t our best meal plan. A few issues we found:

♥ We had a lot of sausages left over so took these with us. As they had to be used to up fairly quickly we ended up having a few sausage meals in a row.
♥ There wasn’t a big selection of foods at the local shop, unless we headed to the next town where there was a Coles (which we did in the second half of the week).
♥ We were rather tight on money so had to be very thrifty.
♥ I didn’t really think about breakfasts enough and so we had toast most mornings.
♥ On the last night we had planned to have pork chops, however we bought them a day or two before and they ended up going off! We really had nothing else put the pasta mixes and one capsicum so had to make do.
♥ Being pregnant there were a few things that I would’ve normally bought but couldn’t have – especially deli meats for sandwiches for lunches. We did end up buying these and I simply cooked mine in the fry pan before adding it to my sandwich. We also had to be very careful with leftovers – Lily and Mr Monkey ended up eating these mostly.

So all in all, it wasn’t too bad a meal plan but I would’ve liked a better variety. I think next year I might be more organised and actually plan it before we go away instead of winging it during the week.

Well it sounds pretty good to me! The only way we can eat real meals while camping is if I plan. I actually spend more time planning our meals than packing our clothes.

I agree with Prue, planning ahead gives you better quality meals, otherwise it can be a bit tricky! And you had a lot of days to plan for, so that is extra hard. Keeping food cold for long periods without a camping fridge is also a challenge.

We change our menus for camping based on time of year too – campfires open up a whole new range of possibilities, but it all takes planning!

I was really unorganised for this trip and I definitely noticed a difference with how I felt overall. I don’t think I could go camping in winter so don’t really have to plan for campfires :)

Freezing foods is the best way to get good meals happening when camping (but we prefer winter camping, so stews are great for keeping warm)

Oh that’s a good idea! I should have pre-made a few meals and frozen them. They would’ve kept ok for at least the first few days. Oh I could never camp in winter! I need sunshine :)

  4. ooo great menu planning advice for campers!!!
